A Time for Self-Care

On Sundays, before the work week starts, I take a moment to spend time with myself. (I hope by now you’ve heard of self-care Sunday) This time is just for me to prepare myself for the week ahead. This first Sweet Butter Sunday is coming for me at a much-needed time. A moment to relax and regroup so I can push forward and continue on the journey to equality in America. I close my eyes and take in a minute of stillness. I pause and really ask myself, how are you? I breathe and let the real answers and weight of my world slowly rise to the surface. For a short time, the truth is there. It’s a time just for me, a time to reflect.

The past few weeks have been weighed down by the recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor. Issues of race and inequality were brought to the forefront and amplified on the news, in social media and even in the workplace. Everywhere people are blasting messages of “Black Lives Matter, We Stand With Blacks, Defund the Police, Against Police Brutality.” At the same time there are leaders and people lamenting that these deaths are valid and do not warrant the outrage the Black community has shown. As a Black woman, this month has been overwhelming and heartbreaking. Each minute of the week was plagued by stories of sadness and injustices to the Black community. My Instagram feed speckled with videos of black men and women literally being killed on camera by the people that are supposed to be their protectors, the police. The Black community in America is pleading for justice. The lack of care and the negative labels the protesters and the Black Lives Matter movement was given by our leaders has been disheartening.

Thus, the need for Sweet Butter Sundays, Self-care Sundays, Take Care Sundays, emotional awareness, self-love, prayer, meditation and all things to maintain mental health and sanity. Monitoring my mental health on a Sunday is not the point, but being intentional about taking time for myself is crucial. My Sunday afternoons usually contain something sweet, something relaxing, and something beautiful. I hope you’re able to spend time on yourself this Sweet Butter Sunday. ❤

Funny Read – You Can’t Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson

Basically Phoebe Robinson is describing what it means to be a Black woman in America. All the please don’t touch my hair moments and the microaggressions disguised as compliments. The best part is this book is hilarious. She talks about these serious issues with the pop-culture references and swag that speaks to the heart every millennial. Highly recommended read for everyone.
